The church in Pergamum was standing strong against persecution, but an unseen cultural “drift” was quietly pulling them off course, much like an ocean current that moves swimmers without them realizing it. Jesus warns them—and us—that the surrounding culture will always exert pressure to accept beliefs and behaviors that run counter to God’s design, and the only way to stay on target is to fix our eyes on the unchanging landmark of God’s Word. While Christians may disagree on secondary issues, Scripture speaks clearly on many others—including sexual ethics—and the church must choose fidelity to God’s truth over cultural tides. Even so, truth must always be paired with Christlike love, so the church remains a community that is rooted in Scripture, growing through correction, and overflowing with grace toward the world.
